SWAN Usability Study

SWAN has completed a usability study on our Enterprise OPAC. Our contracted web design company MERGE Design + Interactive helped SWAN design the usability survey and aims to become familiar with our users while learning more about usability-related barriers they may face. The online and in-person feedback we receive will be incorporated into MERGE Design + Interactive’s recommendations and collaboration with SirsiDynix for Enterprise improvements.

The usability study has four different steps:

1. Scored Audit
MERGE will go through the library catalog and perform a variety of searches and functions in order to audit the OPAC's usability. The scored audit will grade the usability from a scale of -2 (unusable; requires complete rebuild) to +2 (usabale and appropriate as is).

2. User Experience Quantitative Survey
20-25 questions to address key priorities; done through an online survey to garner patron input. Includes questions to build focus groups.

3. User Qualitative Study
Based on participants of the user experience quantitative survey, the study now moves to in-person activity. There will be four different focus groups, and the user qualitative study will take place at two different member library locations.

4. Final Recommendations
Based on what the study finds, MERGE will be building off findings, developing wireframes for key webpages; developing additional documentation or guides as needed to create a roadmap for implementation; designing three to five templates to visually convey graphic UI elements and design-based recommendations; as well as involving SirsiDynix managers throughout.
