Everything You Need to Know About This Year's SWANstravaganza

A week from today, breakfast will be set out and we'll be welcoming almost 300 library community members to Moraine Valley Community College for our second annual user event, the summer SWANstravaganza! If you haven't already registered, you can buy tickets now at the Eventbrite page here: https://sx17.eventbrite.com/. But don't wait too long--we're closing registration soon and getting the lunch order in to the fabulous caterers of MVCC. Here's everything you should know about the day:

Check in begins at 8:30 a.m.

SWAN staff will be at the college earlier that day to get everything set up and ready for the day, but please try to arrive between 8:30 and 9:30 a.m. for a breakfast spread of coffee, beverages, pastries, fruit, and assorted breakfast items. We'll also have sponsor tables set up in the plaza hall so you can browse local vendors and organizations, as well as take a selfie with our two huge inflatable swans that will be in the lobby. Wear something to represent the library or organization you work for, whether it's a shirt or a name tag or something more creative. We want to see all of our members and organizations represented! We'll also have name tags available that day.

Keynote speaker begins at 9:30 a.m.

Our keynote speaker, George Christian, will begin at 9:30 a.m., with an introduction by our Executive Director, Aaron Skog. This year's theme is "Know Your Rights," and we aim to empower SWAN's community and share resources. Christian is the Executive Director of Library Connection Inc. (one of the Connecticut Four). Library Connection is a non-profit cooperative of 30 public and academic libraries which share an integrated library system (CONNECT) and other technological innovations that improve the delivery of services. In 2005, Library Connection received a National Security Letter (NSL) from the FBI, along with its accompanying perpetual gag order, demanding that the "libraries in the Library Connection network identify patrons who had used library computers online at a specific time one year earlier." At this year's SWANstravaganza, George Christian will share that experience and his perspective on defending libraries and their users in 2017.

Lunch and menu options

There will be a lunch break from 12:00 - 12:45 p.m. with boxed lunches, each of which includes a bag of chips, cookie, fruit cup, and assorted canned soda:

  • Overstuffed Tuna Croissant- Flaky croissant stuffed with our famous tuna salad with lettuce and tomato
  • Chicken Caesar Wrap - Grilled chicken breast, romaine lettuce, shredded parmesan cheese, drizzled with Caesar dressing, wrapped in a tender tortilla
  • Caprese Salad Wrap (Vegetarian)- Fresh mozzarella, sliced tomato, basil, and crisp romaine lettuce, with balsamic vinaigrette, wrapped in a spinach tortilla
  • Avocado Strawberry Salad (Vegan/Gluten-Free)- A delightful vegan salad featuring tender baby leaf spinach topped with fresh sliced strawberries, avocado, red onion, and almonds. Served with poppyseed dressing
  • Cranberry Chicken Walnut Salad- Crisp romaine lettuce with grilled chicken, bleu cheese, walnuts, dried cranberries, and raspberry vinaigrette with a fresh baked dinner roll
  • Santa Fe Salad (Vegan)- Chopped romaine, diced tomatoes, red onions, black beans, roasted corn, diced peppers, avocado, tossed with a lime cilantro vinaigrette. Served with crunchy tortilla strips

If you have already provided a lunch option to SWAN, you should be all set. If you have not yet provided a lunch option--no worries. We're making sure there will be plenty of food for everybody. Just be sure to get a ticket before registration closes! At the lunch break, we'll have different tables with suggested discussion topics, department names, or library focuses for you to mingle at. Meet some new library folks and network with the SWAN membership! This is one of the only times a year we all try to meet up and see each other, so make it count.

Afternoon events and giveaways

We'll conclude at 4:30 p.m. after prizes, giveaways, and an update from the Illinois Library Association on current legislation and advocacy initiatives. Also, throughout the day, be on the lookout for five different buttons SWAN is giving away. If there's a special marking on the back of the button you pick up, there's a special prize for you! Try to collect all five buttons that will be set out at different times throughout the day.

For a schedule of the day's events and sessions, as well as a campus map of the college, see the attachments below. The attached schedule has short title descriptions so you'll get an idea of what the session will include. At check-in the day of the event, you'll receive an event program with details about the session and speaker.
