Item Configuration

Item configuration includes policy lists for Item Type, Item Categories 4, 5 and 6, Default Price, and Location.

Item Types identify the material of items and impact how material will circulate and whether holds can be placed. Some Item Types are marked "not recommended" in line with the Item Type Consolidation effort. When Item Types are not required for a circulation or holdability rule, Item Categories should be used instead.

Item Categories are used for statistical analysis and do not impact how items will circulate. Item Categories are defined as follows:

  • Item cat1 - general format
  • Item cat2 - audience or intended age group
  • Item cat3 - fiction/nonfiction facet
  • Item cat4 - genre
  • Item cat5 - carrier type
  • Item cat6 - foreign language

Item cats 1-3 have a fixed list of terms. For more information, see related documentation.

The Default Price configuration inserts price for items that do not have a price in the record. Prices can be set to vary by Item Type.

Locations identify shelving location for item records. Because Locations must often match library signage, the vocabulary list is more expansive and granular.

For item configuration Best Practices, see related documentation.
