I hope everyone is enjoying Summer! Here are just a few updates on cataloging practices and what’s coming.
Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Task Force
A new working group was formed in late Spring with the objective of analyzing subject headings deemed obsolete and biased, and selecting a new controlled vocabulary to replace these terms. The group is in the process of working out the technical details of executing the project. The outcome will enhance the visibility of items pertaining to diversity topics and assist with collection diversity audit. Stay tuned!
A panel discussion is schedule for July 28th, registration via L2: https://librarylearning.org/event/2021-07-28/diversity-audits-sharing-and-panel-discussion
Library of Things, Local Materials, and MARConline Records
We will be updating documentation on the support site regarding the 245 Title tag for records that belong exclusively to your library.
We no longer require that you enter the three-letter code in the 245 tag. However, if you have been doing this and wish to continue with this practice, it’s entirely up to you. It’s worth a reminder that you can add 246 Alternate Title tags with the library three-letter code and the library’s name.
If any local record contains a UPC/ISBN, please add the |z in front of the ISBN to prevent Acquisitions processes from attaching items to your local records.
020 ISBN
Often, SWAN has large scale projects that “grabs” records by ISBN. If you enter any qualifying information after the ISBN number, for example, hardback, paperback, etc, we HIGHLY recommend preceding the information with |q. This tells the system that the qualifying information is a different field, thus it saves us many cleanup hours. (Just a heads-up that Claudia will be considering this an inconsistency). :)
This is how the qualifying information should be entered:
