I hope everyone is having a lovely Summer! Here are just a few updates on cataloging, pre-cats and what’s coming.
Aspen catalog & pre-cats
With the implementation of the Aspen catalog in October, we may need to fine-tune pre-cats.
This may mean changes to minimum standards such as the appropriate foreign language code in the fixed field for foreign language materials. This will give libraries the ability to promote their foreign language collections, since the language information will be extracted directly from the fixed field.
We have not implemented any changes yet. More to come about this topic. Additional pre-cat training can be requested if you feel like your library would benefit on refreshing the skills.
Weeklies 2022
Weekly records for 2022 have been added and the list posted to the support site: Weeklies 2022.
It’s worth reviewing Serials Call Numbers & Policies before creating predictions, to ensure that call numbers are formatted correctly: Serials Call Numbers & Policies.
If you have any questions on how a certain chronology should be entered, or anything related to serials, please reach out!
Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion task force
The group has been meeting a couple of times a month to identify terms that are deemed biased, offensive, or prejudiced, and which vocabulary should replace these obsolete terms.
For example, the subject heading “illegal aliens” has been updated to “undocumented immigrants.” Each record that has been updated has a 903 tag with the obsolete term categorized as legacy term.
