Last Cataloging Corner of 2021! Here are just a few reminders on local practices, and what’s coming, so we start the new year with a clean catalog:
Consumer Reports Buying Guide & Crain’s Book of Lists
These two titles get their own monographic records every year; they do not get attached to the serials records. We noticed that some libraries had attached the Buying Guide to the Consumer Reports serial record, so those call numbers and items have been moved to the monographic record: a3036266.
Among the reasons the Buying Guide and the Book of Lists get their own records is that patrons come looking specifically for these items and libraries were assigning a variety of call numbers that were messing up with call number sorting.

Records for Braille materials
There were a few instances in the past month of publishers reusing ISBNs from regular print books on BRAILLE books. This caused Acquisitions processes to attach regular books to BRAILLE records.
To circumvent this:
When entering a pre-cat or overlaying a Braille record, search by ISBN to see if the ISBN exists in the system. If it belongs to a regular print book, add the |z in front of the ISBN on the Braille record. The documentation on MARC Field Reference – Fixed and 0xx fields has been updated and describes the situations where a |z should precede the ISBN: https://support.swanlibraries.net/documentation/66741
946 Signature tag
Please remember to add a signature tag to pre-cats and full records. It is easier for everyone if we have a question about the item and the signature is right there. The 946 tag can also be used to run statistical reports; however, it needs to be entered in this format:
Three-letter code/your initials/YYYYMMDD
Cataloging Users and Acquisitions Users
These two groups have become one! Because of topics crossing over both modules, this decision will benefit acquisitions and cataloging staff by opening communication lines and networking.
