Dear Libraries,
Spring = cleanup up, so this year we decided to tackle the local records. They proliferate in the system, and I want to emphasize that some standards are required for these records.
Library of Things records
It is a requirement for the 245 title tag to begin with your library’s 3-letter code if the record will not be shared with other libraries.
245 00 WCD paper punch craft kit.
Add as many 246 tags (variant titles) as needed:
246 3_ West Chicago Public Library District paper punch craft kit 246 3_ Paper punch craft kit
Where to include the term “Library of Things:”
You can choose to use a 490 tag (to display it as a series) and/or a 690 Local Subject Heading; whichever your preference remember that consistency is the key to discoverability.
When to create shared records
- The item has a UPC/ISBN and you have not modified/edited any components (no |z in front of UPC/ISBN)
Example: a3047022
024 1_ 033317206667 245 00 TI-84 Plus CE :|bpython. 246 3_ Calculator 246 3_ Graphing calculator. 264 _1 Dallas, TX :|bTexas instruments,|c2021. 300 1 calculator :|bblack & grey ;|c19 cm 590 TOOLS AND THINGS 977 PRE-CAT
- The item does not have a UPC/ISBN and it is generic enough that can be shared
Example: a1267526
245 00 Umbrella. 264 |c2014 300 1 umbrella 590 TOOLS AND THINGS 977 PRE-CAT
When to create local records (non-shared)
- If the record will not be overlaid by a full OCLC record because you created the item yourself, such as book clubs or kits.
- You have manipulated the components in a way that it became unique, such as adding a bag, headphones, chargers, adaptors, etc.
- You have uploaded electronic content to the item, for example, Rokus, Kindles, etc.
- Remember to add the |z in front of UPC/ISBN.
