Connecting to SWAN

Each SWAN Member Library is required to utilize a Virtual Private Network (VPN) tunnel to establish a secure connection to the SWAN Symphony Server. SWAN supports most enterprise grade firewalls capable of IPsec VPN..
Please refer to the SWAN Network Policy for further information about the connectivity requirements to SWAN.

Prior to purchasing a firewall for your library, please open a ticket to ensure compatibility with SWAN.

Library-maintained connections

As of 2018, SWAN member libraries are required to manage their own firewall and VPN connections to SWAN. Support staff will provide assistance in configuring the required VPN connection between the library and SWAN. The library is responsible for all other aspects of firewall management.

If your SWAN-managed library wishes to become  a self-maintainer, please refer to the SWAN Self-Maintenance VPN Agreement.
All SWAN member libraries with a library-maintained connection must have a signed VPN Agreement.

SWAN-managed connections

Some SWAN libraries fall under a grandfathered service agreement where SWAN is the sole administrator of the library firewall and all configuration and maintenance of the firewall is handled exclusively by SWAN.

Presently, SonicWALL firewalls are deployed in a variety of models best suited to meet the network requirements of each library. In the event that the SWAN-managed firewall needs to be replaced, SWAN will work with the library to select a suitable replacement device and schedule installation.

If a library with a SWAN-managed firewall wishes to take over management of their firewall, the library administrator may open a ticket and include a signed Self-Maintenance VPN Agreement. SWAN will then work with the library to turn over administrative rights to the firewall.

Off-Site Connectivity

Many circulation features may be accessed from outside the library network via MobileStaff.

SWAN WorkFlows is only accessible within your library's network over a secure VPN connection. SWAN does not permit outside access directly to WorkFlows from personal devices or home networks. However, a VPN client may be used to connect to the library's network to provide limited access to WorkFlows.

Most SWAN-compatible firewalls offer solutions for client-based VPN connectivity. Please open a ticket for more information.
