Peripherals

SWAN supports several peripheral categories for use with WorkFlows and other services, including: barcode readers, printers, cameras, and signature pads. While many devices may be supported, model recommendations or requirements are provided on this page.

Barcode Scanners

Barcode scanners are devices used to read and decode the barcodes on library cards and material for use in many library procedures.

SWAN recommends Honeywell Hyperion Scanners, as they have proven to be reliable, easy to use, and inexpensive. While many other USB barcode scanners should work, reliability and user experience may vary with lesser-known devices.

Please note: barcodes displayed on mobile devices can only be scanned with an LED scanner, commonly referred to as linear-imaging scanners. Laser barcode scanners are not capable of scanning mobile barcodes.

For information on scanner setup, please visit our Barcode Scanner documentation.

Recommended model (updated April 2023)

SWAN recommends the following barcode scanner for use in all areas of the library:

The PDF linked below provides SWAN recommended scanner settings for our recommended model.

Scanner for MobileStaff

SWAN recommends two models for use with MobileStaff. For more information, please visit our MobileStaff Documentation.

SocketScan S720 - Drivers License Enabled

SocketScan S700 - Standard Barcodes Only

Printers

WorkFlows uses the Windows print manager. Typically, if the printer functions in Windows, it will also work in WorkFlows. Other receipt printers will likely work, but your experiences and compatibility may vary with other devices.

For details on printer configuration, please see our printer setup documentation.

The following printer recommendations have been tested by SWAN staff and are known to be compatible.

   Spine Label Printer

Bluetooth Printer (for use with MobileStaff)

Signature Pads

Signature pads may be used to capture patron signatures when signing up for a library card. The following signature pad is the only model supported for capturing patron signatures in WorkFlows. The SWAN WorkFlows installer includes the necessary driver.

For information on setup, please see our signature pad documentation.

   Required Model

If your library is using signature pads for the first time, please open a ticket so SWAN staff may enable signatures for your library on the system.

If you're having difficulty with WorkFlows recognizing the signature pad:

  •        Ensure device is plugged directly to the system (no USB hubs)
  •        Verify that any Topaz software has been uninstalled
  •        Install this Standalone Driver

Cameras

USB or built-in webcams may be used to capture photos for inclusion in patron records. Most webcams are compatible.

For information on adding patron photos, please view our patron photos documentation.
