This section contains information pertinent to the use of each 590 term, including usage notes, disambiguation, best practices, and sample 300 fields.
ART
Use for art in original form as well as prints, sketches, etc. Do not use for published art books unless the book itself is an art object. Books on art should be categorized with the blank or BOOK 590.

AUDIOBOOK CASSETTE
Use for audiobooks and spoken word recordings that can be played back using a standard audio cassette player. Use only for audio cassettes approximating 4" x 2.5" in dimension. Mini cassettes should be assigned the 590 OTHER AUDIO.

AUDIOBOOK CD
Used for audiobooks and spoken word recordings that can be played back using a standard audio CD player. Use only for CDs that are 4 3/4" in diameter and store uncompressed audio. Minidiscs and 3" CDs should take the 590 OTHER AUDIO. CDs containing data files in mp3 format should take the 590 CD MP3.
If a CD contains a mixture of spoken and audio content, use your best judgment to determine prominence.

BLU-RAY
Use for materials on Blu-Ray intended for video playback, including 4K Blu-ray. The Blu-Ray disc format is also used to store Playstation 3 & 4 and Xbox One video games, but these items should be assigned the 590 VIDEO GAME.
If separating combo packs for individual circulation, the bibliographic record for the Blu-ray version should take the 590 BLU-RAY.

BOOK (Do not use) / No 590 Field
Items with no 590 field will search and display as the BOOK format. Standard to 15.5-point font size book materials do not contain a 590 field. Print materials that do not fit into another 590 category belong here (cf. BRAILLE, LARGE PRINT, MAGAZINES AND JOURNALS, GOVERNMENT DOCUMENTS, NEWSPAPERS).

Note: For books and other textual materials printed with a larger typeface that are not defined as LARGE PRINT, generally above 13 points and below 16 points, see LARGER PRINT further down on the page.
BRAILLE
Used for all materials printed in Braille, including those with both print and Braille together.

CD
Use for musical recordings that can be played back using a standard audio CD player. Use only for CDs that are 4 3/4" in diameter and store uncompressed audio. Minidiscs and 3" CDs should take the 590 OTHER AUDIO. CDs containing data files in mp3 format should take the 590 CD MP3.
If a CD contains a mixture of spoken and audio content, use match the 590 term to the bibliographic record type.

CD MP3
Use for data CDs on which are stored MP3 files intended for playback in an audio CD player with MP3 playback capabilities. MP3 CDs may occasionally contain data in other file formats, but if the primary presentation of the material is as an audio CD, use this 590. MP3 CDs may be spoken word or musical, but SWAN's collection is overwhelmingly audiobooks.

COMBO PACK
Use for Blu-ray/DVD combo packs circulated as a single unit. Do not use for component parts when splitting combo packs to circulate separately.

COMPUTER SOFTWARE
Use for software intended for use on a computer workstation regardless of storage medium. Items with this 590 include downloadable content, CD-ROMs, DVD-ROMs, USB flash drives and diskettes. Computer video games are also given the 590 COMPUTER SOFTWARE.

DEVICE
Use for portable, interactive electronics such as tablets, laptops, and GPS devices. Do not use for e-readers, which take the 590 EREADER.
Do not use for Playaway Launchpad devices. These items should take the 590 PLAYAWAY.
DVD
Use for materials on DVD intended for video playback. The DVD disc format is also used to store Playstation 2 and Xbox 360 video games, but these items should be assigned the 590 VIDEO GAME.
If separating combo packs for individual circulation, the bibliographic record for the DVD version should take the 590 DVD.

EQUIPMENT
Use for electronic devices and accessories that do not fit into the 590s DEVICE or EREADER. This may include video and audio playback devices, overhead projectors, cables, power adapters, Wi-Fi hotspots, Apple TV/Roku, video game consoles, video game controllers, video game accessories, computer peripherals, and data storage devices. Use it also for musical instruments.
EREADER
Use for portable reading devices including Kindle and Nook branded devices. Other portable devices intended primarily for reading may be included. Use this 590 whether the e-reader device is empty or pre-loaded with e-book materials your library has collected.
GOVERNMENT DOCUMENT
Use for any materials printed by the federal, state, or local government at the government's expense. This 590 supersedes all others and is to be used regardless of format and contents of materials.
INTERNET RESOURCES
Use for any content that requires an Internet connection and web browser to access. These materials will typically include an 856 field in the bibliographic record with a link to access the content. Use this 590 regardless of the format of the content itself. Text, audio, video, instructional, and interactive materials may all use this 590.

KIT
Use for collections of two or more items of differing media meant to be used in tandem with no single item taking precedence. This may include collections of items compiled by a library for circulation as a unit.
Do not use KIT for book/audio combination items including read-along books and Playaways with accompanying print materials. Read-along books should be assigned a 590 for AUDIOBOOK CD/CASSETTE or BOOK as appropriate. Playaways with accompanying books should be assigned PLAYAWAY.
LARGE PRINT
Use for books and other textual materials printed with a larger typeface, generally 16 points or larger in size. This 590 value does not supersede others, so if another 590 field other than BOOK applies, it should be used. For example, Reader's Digest Large Print Edition has the 590 MAGAZINES AND JOURNALS despite its typeface.

LARGER PRINT (Do not use) / No 590 Field
Books and other textual materials printed with a larger typeface, generally above 13 points and below 16 points, should not contain a 590 format field.

Note: While these larger print materials do not include a 590 LARGE PRINT, the Repr (OCLC Form) field in the fixed field must still have a 'd'.
MAGAZINES AND JOURNALS
Use for serially published textual materials not in newspaper form. This 590 may apply to bibliographic records for continuing subscriptions, library-bound collections, and individual issues. Microfilm /microfiche versions of these materials should be assigned MICROFILM AND MICROFICHE. Limit use of this field to consumer and B2B magazines and scholarly journals. Books published serially will typically be assigned the BOOK or {blank} 590 value.

MAP
Use for any material that is primarily a graphical map. This can include transit, geographic, and political maps, as well as other map-formatted infographics. It applies to printed and manuscript maps, atlases, and globes. In cataloging, any record of fixed field Type e or f should take this 590 value.

MICROFILM AND MICROFICHE
Use for textual materials in microfilm or microfiche format. This field supersedes most others and should be used for microform and microfiche versions of books, magazines, and newspapers.

MISCELLANEOUS
Use of this field should be avoided as often as possible. Use only when no other 590 field is appropriate.
NEWSPAPERS
Use for printed serial publications in tabloid or broadsheet newspaper format. This 590 may apply to bibliographic records for continuing subscriptions, library-bound collections, and individual issues. Microfilm /microfiche versions of these materials should be assigned MICROFILM AND MICROFICHE.

OTHER AUDIO
Use for audio materials that do not fit into any other 590 category. This category is appropriate for both spoken and musical sound recordings and includes LPs, 45s, and other analog formats, minidiscs, reel-to-reel tapes, music cassettes, Wonderbooks, VOX books, Go Readers, Tonies, and, Yoto cards, and preloaded audio devices not distributed by Playaway.

OTHER VIDEO
Use for video materials that do not fit into any other 590 category. This category includes VHS cassettes, miniDVDs, reel-to-reel tapes, HD DVDs, and preloaded video devices not distributed by Playaway. Do not use for Playaway View devices. These items are assigned the 590 PLAYAWAY.

PLAYAWAY
Use for preloaded audio and video devices distributed under the Playaway brand. This includes Playaway, Playaway Launchpad, Playaway View, and Playaway audio materials distributed with print books. Preloaded devices not distributed by Playaway are assigned OTHER AUDIO or OTHER VIDEO as appropriate.

SHEET MUSIC
Use for all materials consisting primarily of printed music. This includes scores, sheet music, study scores, and instructional books. Books containing primarily text with numerous musical examples should still be assigned the 590 BOOK. Thematic indices are also assigned BOOK.

SPECIAL COLLECTION
Use for items belonging to a special collection at your institution. Please note that use of this term will not allow for a specific format term to be applied. It is recommended that you only use this term for items unique to your library.
TOOLS AND THINGS
Use for non-electronic tools and objects such as hand tools, cooking and baking supplies, sewing supplies, etc.
TOYS AND GAMES
This term is used for children's toys as well as recreational board, card, and lawn games. Do not use this term for console or computer video games. Console video games are assigned VIDEO GAME and computer video games are assigned COMPUTER SOFTWARE.
VIDEO GAME
Use this term for console and handheld video games on cartridge or disc. Do not use for computer video games, which take the term COMPUTER SOFTWARE. Please note that every record using this 590 term must include an edition statement (MARC field 250) identifying the console for which the game is made, even if the game is exclusive to that console.
