100/110/111/130 Fields
One of these fields is required if applicable.
SWAN encourages the use of subfield |e relationship designators where possible. If using, please select terms from the Library of Congress' MARC Code List for Relators, which has been reconciled with the RDA relator list. Do not use subfield |4 relator codes in new cataloging.
Musical Recordings
When cataloging "popular" (i.e. performer-focused, non-classical) music sound recordings, SWAN practice is to allow a primary performer to be coded as a 100/110 main entry.
RDA practice dictates that performers must be coded as added entries if they did not also compose their own music. However, this can result in a confusing search experience because patrons would expect a popular artist to be given responsibility for their own recordings.
This is compounded by the fact the 1xx field acts as a valuable source of information for record grouping purposes in Aspen. Without an author value, the grouping mechanism will rely on title alone, which can lead to recordings being grouped that should not be.
This is why SWAN has opted to break from established practice and allow for primary performers to appear in the 1xx field at the discretion of the cataloger.
