490 Field
Enter the series title as it appears on the source. If a series statement is not indicated on the item or does not include enumeration, you may source these from an author's, publisher's, or vendor's website or another reliable source. When doing so, please check for precedent in the SWAN database and do your best to align series wording and enumeration format with existing records.
First Indicator:
0 - Series not traced
1 - Series traced
A traced series is searchable by the specific series title and it must have a corresponding 8xx tag.
Leave the second indicator blank.
Enter the volume number in subfield 'v' preceded by semicolon:
490 1_ Dog man ;|v12
In SWAN, we make every effort to trace series, so for every 490 tag, an 800 or 830 tag must exist in a record for a title that belongs to a series.
800, 810, 811, and 830 Fields
8xx fields are required regardless of whether a controlled version of a heading has been established. If no authority record exists, refer to the SWAN database to see if any other records from this series have are cataloged. Mimic existing 8xx field formatting if appropriate. In the absence of precedent, make your best guess as to the appropriate field.
Generally, defer to the statement as found on the item. You will also need to determine whether the series belongs in an 800/810/811 field or an 830. If you can determine that a single entity is responsible for authoring (not publishing) a series, prefer an 800/810/811 field. When in doubt, use an 830.
800 1_ Pilkey, Dav,|d1966-|tDog Man ;|v12.
Traced series format:
490 1_ Series title ;|vbk. # 490 1_ Series title ;|vbk. #
800 1_ Author.|tSeries title ;|v#. 830 _0 Series title ;|v#.
Should I use 800 or 830?
- The 800 tag must be used when all the titles in the series are the work of a single author.
- The 830 tag must be used when the books within the series are the works of multiple authors.
