Contributors
Entries for publication and distribution entities are not required. Generally, all entities expressed in the 245 field should be traced in a 7xx field, for example, translators, illustrators, directors, editors, and others.
SWAN encourages the use of subfield |e relationship designators where possible. If using, please select terms from the Library of Congress' MARC Code List for Relators, which has been reconciled with the RDA relator list. Do not use subfield |4 relator codes in new cataloging.
Use authorized headings when available. If no authorized heading is established, you may create a heading to the best of your ability with the information you have. If the heading you construct matches the heading for another entity with the same name, find a way to differentiate the two.
Example 1:
700 1_ Harron, Mary,|efilm director.
Example 2:
710 2_ Burger Collection (Firm),|eproduction company.
Titles and related works
In the SWAN catalog, if a record contains a formatted 505 contents note, it is not necessary to repeat title entries in 740 fields.
780 & 785 Fields
These fields are used for serials records, when a magazine ceases publication but is continued, absorbed, or superseded by another magazine. At your discretion, you may opt to accompany these fields with a 591 internal note indicating the SWAN Title Control Number of preceding or succeeding records.
SWAN takes care of "closing" the serial record of the magazine that is ceasing, being continued, or absorbed, by adding the appropriate values to the fixed field, 245, 264, 362, 591, and 780 tags. If you are aware of a magazine that has undergone publication changes, please notify SWAN so that records can be updated.
