Series Consistency

Libraries are expected to check how the previous title in a series was cataloged to ensure series consistency and to verify series authorized headings before overlaying a pre-cat or exporting an OCLC record.

After discussion of Fiction series consistency, the Cataloging Advisory voted on and determined that cataloging libraries will enter volume numbers in subfield |v of the 8xx tags without the abbreviations and symbols: bk., v., vol., #, or no., for all name title/series.

This decision was based on being patron-friendly because it is not always obvious as to what number in the series the book was.

The 490 tag should contain what is on the item and the 8xx tags should contain the authorized authority heading.

For fiction titles that do not currently have an authorized authority record, use the syntax should be 800 tag with a first indicator 1, followed by Author Name Heading, subfield t, Series Title ; subfield |v number in series.

Example:

490 1_ Amulet ;|v2

800 1_ Kibuishi, Kazu,ǂd1978- ǂtAmulet ;|v2.
