240 - Uniform title

Enter a 240 field, Uniform Title, when applicable and to distinguish the heading for a work from the heading for a different work. Its use is recommended for non-English materials when the item is a translation. See Non-English Materials.

It is also used as a controlled form of the title to bring together multiple editions of the same work that might not have the same wording of the title on the title page.

Fist indicator:

0 = not printed or displayed on the item

1 = printed or displayed

Second indicator:

Use the same rules as the 245 tag for second indicator, according to the number of nonfiling characters. Omit initial articles and do not include a period at the end.

240 10 Bonsai bible
245 14 The bonsai beginner's bible.

Do not use it if the record contains a 130 field.

245 - Title

See information about the title field: Creating a Pre-Cat.

246 - Alternate title

In addition to titles present on the item itself, please add 246 fields to expand the following:

  • Ampersands: Include a 246 where '&' is replaced with 'and'.
  • One- and two-digits numerals: write out the numbers in the language of the title. Numerals with more than three digits are not required, but you can expand them at your discretion.
  • Contractions.

These 246 fields for expansion are only required for the title proper. You do not need to expand subtitles.

Indicators:

First indicator: 3  > a title added entry is generated from the field for indexing purposes.

Second indicator: 0  > represents portion of the title, or subtitle.

250 - Edition statement

Transcribe these as found on the item. Record multiple edition statements in repeated 250 fields rather than condensing them into a single field.

Additional edition statements may be required depending on the format of the item:

  • Console video games: Record the console as an edition statement.
  • Blu-ray/DVD combo packs: Record whether the item is a combo pack or a component part of a combo pack as an edition statement. See Combo Packs for more information.

264 - Production, Publication, Distribution, Manufacture, and Copyright Notice

Identify publishers and provide an additional 264 field if a copyright or phonogram date is present on the item.

2 - Distribution
3 - Manufacture
4 - Copyright notice date
