Vox & Other Read-Along Formats

Due to the ambiguous nature of classifying Vox, Wonderbooks, and other read-along materials, and the differing ways they are cataloged on OCLC, SWAN has compiled the following guidelines to ensure consistency in cataloging for them and other audio-enabled read-along books.

Scope

Refer to this guide to describe all audio-enabled read-along picture books that come in an all-in-one package (Vox, Wonderbooks, etc.). The audio playback element is built into the book, and children can control playback and volume while following along with the text.

Format

Following a discussion with the Cataloging Advisory Group, SWAN has decided that these materials are primarily audio materials rather than print. This is consistent with the majority of catalog records on OCLC.

Catalog records should follow audiobook conventions. Use Record Type "i" (Leader 006/00) for Non-Musical Sound Recording.

In the absence of an OCLC record for Sound Recordings, please update an existing RecType "a" record to be RecType "i", which involves changing up the entire fixed field before import.

Please change the fixed field according to the codes below:

format = sound recording

type = i

comp = nn

part = n

TrAr = n

FMus = n

*LTxt = f

*For items that are not fiction, please see OCLC's LTxt: Literary Text for Sound Recordings documentation to find the appropriate code to enter in the LTxt fixed field.

If you receive an error message from OCLC "Not authorized to change to i", please report the error:  Action -> Report error.

Enter the following information in the message box, then click on Report Error:

"Please change the record to nonmusical sound recording, with the appropriate fixed field: type = i, comp = nn, part = n, TrAr = n, FMus = n, LTxt = f."

Use the 590 value OTHER AUDIO.

Physical Description

Cataloging these as audiobooks means a simple pagination in the 300 field may be confusing. SWAN recommends using the phrase “1 audio-enabled book ([pagination])”.

300    1 audio-enabled book (unpaged) :|bcolor illustrations ;|c29 cm
300    1 audio-enabled book (28 pages) :|bcolor illustrations ;|c29 cm

3xx Fields

Like other mixed-format materials, cataloging read-alongs may require doubling of 33x fields. The following set of fields should work for most records:

336    spoken word |bspw |2rdacontent
336    text |btxt |2rdacontent
337    audio |bs |2rdamedia
337    unmediated |bn |2rdamedia
338    other |bsz |2rdacarrier
338    volume |bnc |2rdacarrier

Note Fields

For Vox and Wonderbooks, the following notes may be useful, and they are found on most records. Similar notes may be found on websites or the items themselves for other brands. SWAN recommends use of notes for clarification so patrons can understand these materials by examining the catalog record.
